Oklahoma Sooners now have an advantage in their last game vs. LSU that they didn't know they would have

It’s weeks away from this game, but it seems like the Oklahoma Sooners will already have an advantage over the LSU Tigers when the two play their last regular-season games of the season. On Sunday night, the day after brutally losing at home to the Texas A&M Aggies, LSU fired Brian Kelly, the former head coach.

That gives Oklahoma an advantage for their game, because LSU will be set to have an interim head coach rather than the guy who’s been running the show. How is that an advantage for OU? Well, it’s simple, really.

Oklahoma to have an advantage over LSU with Brian Kelly out

"That's out of my hands," Kelly told reporters after the 49-25 loss at home. "It's impossible for the head coach that's been here for four years and 35 years of doing this to think anything else, but this is my responsibility, and we've got to get it turned around."

Kelly did not, in fact, get it turned around, as his buyout is around $54 million, a hefty chunk of change.

When a firing happens, a team doesn’t necessarily get better than they were before. Sure, a team is firing a head coach because that head coach wasn’t doing his job, but the guys that were behind him, I.E., the guy who’s being named interim head coach, are behind him for a reason.

Oklahoma Sooners' remaining 2025 schedule

  • November 1, 2025: at Tennessee (Away) - 7:30 PM ET 11
  • November 15, 2025: at Alabama (Away) - TBD 11
  • November 22, 2025: vs. Missouri (Home) - 12:00 PM ET 11
  • November 29, 2025: vs. LSU (Home) - TBD 11

Usually, he doesn’t have the experience the head coach had. Usually, if he does, it went horribly the last time he was head coach. That’s a big deal for an opposing team and its players. The players on Oklahoma will know they somewhat have a mental edge over the other team, and that’s huge when it comes to football.

The other team can often be checked out by then, and that’s something the Sooners. Will need to take advantage of. By then, they could be in the hunt for a College Football Playoff spot, and that win at the end of the season could be worth a lot.
