Oklahoma Sooners quarterback John Mateer has gotten off to a hot start in 2025. Not many outside of OU fans, the media, and people within the program thought he would have success in the SEC. But, he's been great, so good that he's just joined some pretty good company on a record list.
According to Oklahoma's OU Associate AD and Strategic Communications guy, Mike Houck, Mateer's 944 passing yards through three games are the third most by an OU QB through the first three games of his career in Crimson and Cream. Josh Heupel had 1,202 passing yards in the first three games of 1999, and Baker Mayfield, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback, had 1,062 yards in the first three games of 2015. Mateer is in elite company.
Mateer is starting his potential Heisman campaign off to a great start, and it feels like what he's done through three games is not being talked about enough.

The biggest talking point coming into the 2025 season, anytime the Sooners were mentioned, had to be about Mateer. Well, maybe the offense first, and if that's fixed, then the quarterback they got in the transfer portal from Washington State. People said he wouldn't be able to play against other top-end talent. And, granted, he hasn't played an SEC game yet, but he dominated the Michigan Wolverines.
Mateer really made some incredible plays. His signature play against Michigan, where he shrugged off a defensive lineman and hit Isaiah Sategna on the sideline for what was just short of the goal line, was huge. He did something similar against the Temple Owls, where he stiff-armed an Owls defender to hit a wide receiver on the run across his body.
One of the best parts about Mateer's game so far hasn't even been his passing. Now, that's great, because of course, we are mentioning him on a list with Mayfield and Heupel when it comes to that side of his game. However, his legs have been pretty great. He's no Kyler Murray in terms of his speed, but man, he's quicker than he looks, and he's smart about when and where he should run. That 51-yard touchdown he had was amazing, and yes, he was fast, but he was also smart in his decision-making of how to hit the open gap.
Mateer is a big reason the offense has been as good as it has, and with his legs, he's somewhat made up for a run game that's been lacking in the RB room a bit, outside of Tory Blaylock. Mateer has a legit shot at winning the Heisman, and records like these will only start to come out with Mateer's name on them the deeper we get into he season.
