Oklahoma Sooners trending for pair of talented Texas playmakers who would radically shift their 2026 recruiting class

The Oklahoma Sooners have had a couple of recruiting battles not go their way over the last couple of weeks, losing out on players like defensive tackle Tajh Overton and defensive backs Danny Odem and Braeden Presley.

Every loss is a player that could have helped the Sooners rebuild their 2026 class, which currently sits incredibly low in recruiting rankings.

If the Sooners want to turn their fortunes around, they have to stack up major recruiting wins-and fast. Fortunately, they are trending upwards for a pair of elite offensive playmakers from Texas who could be just what the Sooners needed.

According to On3's Sam Spiegelman, the Oklahoma Sooners are among the leaders for top-100 recruits Davian Groce and Jordan Clay.

Davian Groce:

"Electric four-star WR Davian Groce from Frisco (Texas) Lone Star logged official visits to Houston, Florida, Baylor, and Oklahoma. This is shaping up to be a race between Florida, Baylor and Oklahoma — and that the blue-chipper is “nearing a decision.”

Multiple sources point to the Bears and Sooners as the teams leading the conversation for Groce. If a decision were to be made today, we’d lean toward Oklahoma as the team with an edge. No team has been at or near the top with the Texas blue-chipper longer than the Sooners — in spite of a late surge from Baylor."

Jordan Clay:

"Touted four-star WR Jordan Clay of San Antonio (Texas) Madison will make his college commitment on July 11. Clay will choose from Baylor, Colorado and Oklahoma, which hosted Clay for his final official visit on June 20 for the ChampU BBQ.

Baylor has been setting the pace in this recruitment from the start and has remained a favorite for the talented pass-catcher and members of his family throughout this process, but we’ve heard that the Sooners closed the gap significantly during Clay’s final official visit. We are keeping an eye out for the Sooners, who have serious traction in this recruitment as July 11 approaches."

How important would it be for the Sooners to land this pair?

Oklahoma is looking to add at least three receivers to the class, and these two joining longtime commit Daniel Odom would give the Sooners what they are looking for.

On top of that, however, it would be a massive step forward into propelling the Sooners even closer to a top ten recruiting class, something Brent Venables accomplished every year in his first three years until last year.

Looking at 247Sports' Class Calculator, the Sooners currently sit 41st in the country with a 195.08 score. If we add just Clay and Groce, Oklahoma would vault all the way to 18th! That's before adding any other potential recruits the Sooners are confident in as well.

These two are massive commitments that the Sooners need to be sending the house for and close quickly.
