Oklahoma State Football Loses Second Quarterback to the Transfer Portal

Mike Gundy and the Oklahoma State Cowboys have an interesting situation on their hands with multiple players fighting for the starting spot under center in Stillwater.

On Monday, former starter Maealiuaki Smith entered his name into the transfer portal, but that would not be the only OSU quarterback to depart the program as sophomore signal caller Garret Rangel followed suit on Wednesday evening.

In his three-year career with the Cowboys, Rangel posted 93 completions for 1,075 yards and a touchdown-to-interception ratio of eight to six. Rangel’s time with the program had been an up-and-down one as he found himself amid quarterback battles every season of his career.

In 2022, Rangel saw action in limited games, filling in for Spencer Sanders. The following season, Rangel lost the job after clashing with Gunner Gundy and Alan Bowman, who each got the go-ahead. In 2024, Rangel sat behind Bowman, who he would eventually replace, prior to a season-ending injury, which turned the keys over to Maealiuaki Smith.

Coming out of Lone Star High School in the Class of 2022, Rangel was listed as a three-star prospect by the 247Sports index and the nation’s 420th-ranked player. He also checked in as the 20th-ranked player at his position and the 58th-ranked player in the state of Texas.

With a somewhat crowded quarterback room paired with the emergence of incoming quarterback Hauss Hejny, Rangel elected to depart the program and search for a new home in the transfer portal.
