Oklahoma State Might Not Need a Coaching Search at All

If Mike Gundy were to be fired or step away from Oklahoma State, the Cowboys may already have their next man lined up. According to Pistol Guys host Carson Cunningham, former OSU quarterback and current Atlanta Falcons assistant Zac Robinson is the clear No. 1 target for the job.

“I can confirm Zac Robinson is the clear-cut, No. 1 target,” Cunningham posted on X. “There was mutual interest last spring, and that remains today. Tricky hire timing-wise with the Falcons’ final regular season game being Dec. 29. OSU’s season ends Nov. 29.”

Robinson has steadily risen through the NFL coaching ranks and is currently serving as the offensive coordinator for Atlanta. He has long been seen as a future college head coach, and his Stillwater ties make him a natural fit if the job ever opens.

The challenge, as Cunningham notes, is timing. If OSU were to make a move shortly after the season finale, they would be doing so a full month before Robinson is contractually available. That could complicate the process unless the Cowboys are willing to wait, or unless Atlanta is eliminated early and a transition can be worked out quietly behind the scenes.

From a Big 12 standpoint, Robinson fits the mold of a modern, offensive-minded hire who understands both the culture of the program and the evolution of the sport. He played under Gundy, understands the expectations in Stillwater, and would bring a fresh energy that aligns with the changing face of the conference.

For now, Gundy remains firmly in place and is under contract through 2027. But with the ever-changing nature of college football, and with OSU positioned at a crossroads in the new Big 12, Robinson’s name is one to remember. If the door ever opens, the Cowboys may not need to look far.
