The Ole Miss football team is undergoing a major transition this offseason after two straight seasons with 10 or more wins. Not only did the team lose 18 starters to either the NFL Draft or the NCAA Transfer Portal, but longtime starting quarterback Jaxson Dart moved on to the professional ranks.
Two-sport athlete Austin Simmons is expected to be his successor, and he even quit the Rebels' baseball team to prove his commitment to head coach Lane Kiffin and his teammates. However, Kiffin has already added some competition to the quarterback room, as Ole Miss went out and grabbed Ferris State transfer Trinidad Chambliss, who was a Division II All-American last season.
While Simmons is still expected to be the starter when the Rebels take the field in Week 1, Kiffin added another transfer quarterback on Tuesday. According to On3 Sports' Pete Nakos, former Oklahoma State quarterback Maealiuaki Smith is transferring to Ole Miss.
Smith was a three-star quarterback coming out of high school and played just one season for the Cowboys before transferring. He did not use a year of eligibility as he played in just four games last season, so he'll join the Rebels with four years left to play.
In his four contests, he completed 59.5% of his passes for 489 yards, two touchdowns and four interceptions. His best performance was against Texas Tech, as he went 26-for-35, throwing for 316 yards and two touchdowns while also adding a score on the ground.
Perhaps Smith factors in as a long-term option when Simmons' career is over, but based on his track record as a recruit and a freshman, it is unlikely that he will dethrone last year's backup for the starting job. Coach Kiffin does love his quarterbacks, however, and you can truly never have too many good ones on a roster.
