The Oklahoma Sooners were absolutely decimated by injury in 2024, particularly in the wide receiver room. By midseason, the Sooners were down their top five wide receivers in the room.
After that, depth players like Zion Ragins, Brenen Thompson, and Zion Kearney also sustained injuries by the end of the season. It was a completely unprecedented string of injuries that wiped out an already mostly defunct offense.
Many hoped that that wouldn't happen again, as it was truly unprecedented and a terrible streak of bad luck.
Well...think again. Murphy's Law (what can go wrong will go wrong) loves the Sooners, and that injury bug has already popped up in this room during spring training.
According to team sources, multiple wide receivers have been injured throughout spring camp, with none bigger than a massive injury this week to stud transfer Javonnie Gibson. Gibson had dominated spring practice and had many people buzzing about his potential this season, but he sustained a critical lower leg injury in practice on Monday.
While the exact injury is unknown, there was enough concern surrounding it for this that I expect it's a long-term recovery for him.
This is on top of a recent injury for Arkansas transfer Isaiah Sategna and an injury that has kept Southern Illinois transfer Keontez Lewis from practicing over the past month. Neither of those two injuries seem like a long-term concern, but both are substantial setbacks for both players.
All of these injuries are on top of Jayden Gibson suffering a setback in his injury recovery last month. That is four separate wide receivers battling an ailment, and we aren't even into the summer months.
I am absolutely baffled at the string of injuries in this room over the last year. While some of them are more common, nagging injuries that just happen while playing football, there are also just uncommon freak injuries that you can't do anything to prevent, which is seemingly what happened to Javonnie Gibson.
In the last year, the Sooners have had nine different wide receivers suffer nine different injuries. These issues go on before Venables, as the Sooners also lost Theo Wease and Jadon Haselwood to injury as well.
It's uncanny what is happening in this room. I have never seen anything like it. The good news is that these injuries are occurring well before the season, so there is still time to recover beforehand.
Now, it might be a good idea for the Sooners to pay attention to wide receivers in the spring portal to reinforce this room.
