Optimism Grows Around Behren Morton’s Health Status

Texas Tech fans might be breathing easier today. After exiting the game against Kansas hurt, quarterback Behren Morton looks like he won’t miss time and could be available when the 6‑0 Red Raiders take on Arizona State.

Morton originally came off the field with what appeared to be a knee issue; reports afterward indicated the concern was serious enough to cause some panic. But the good news: early medical checks, including imaging, showed nothing structurally broken or catastrophic. In postgame comments, coach Joey McGuire struck an optimistic tone, saying the injury is not believed to be severe.

This isn’t the first time Morton’s durability has been tested. Earlier in the season, against Utah, he left the game after a helmet-to-turf collision and was ruled out for the remainder of that matchup. Still, Tech’s staff consistently downplayed long-term damage from that incident, and McGuire said afterward that Morton “should be okay” moving forward.

It’s reasonable to expect precaution in the approach. Even if Morton is cleared, the Red Raiders will likely manage his workload, monitor symptoms, and ensure full recovery before letting him take unnecessary risks. If Arizona State is in the cards and Morton is cleared, his presence would be a major boost, not only for stability under center, but for confidence up front.

But until practice reports confirm full participation, nothing is guaranteed. Backup Will Hammond has shown ability in relief, and Texas Tech’s coaching staff knows the importance of being prepared. Still, all signs point to Morton suiting up again, and that’s the news Red Raider fans want to hear.
