Dan Lanning and the Oregon Ducks have done it again. Lanning said last week that they were utilizing their bye week to go connect with some potential recruits, and apparently that paid off.
Oregon has flipped 2025 IOL Douglas Utu, the No. 4 ranked interior offensive lineman in the country according to On3, from the Tennessee Volunteers. It was predicted a week ago by On3's Steve Wiltfong, and now it's become a reality. Landing Utu is a massive win at a glaring position of need in Oregon's 2025 recruiting class, and provides another blue chip talent as Oregon aims to close out another top-5 recruiting class.
“From day one, Coach Lanning, [offensive line] Coach [A'lique] Terry, and the entire staff made me feel like a priority,” he told On3. “They were upfront, genuine, and showed real belief in my abilities. Their energy, transparency, and vision for how I fit into the program were clear, and they made me feel like I would truly be part of the Oregon family.”
“Coach Lanning is building an elite program at Oregon,” he said. “He’s creating a culture of toughness, discipline, and accountability, and you can feel that everyone is bought in. It’s exciting to be joining a program on the rise, and l know I’m stepping into a winning environment where excellence is expected every day.”
Well said.
Utu is a massive win. According to On3's grading, Utu becomes the fifth-highest graded player in Oregon's 2025 recruiting class.
Playing at Bishop Gorman, a program that the Ducks have a good history of recruiting out of, Utu is used to playing at high competition levels with championship aspirations.
The Ducks are expected to see massive turnover on the offensive line after the 2024 season, with six of the top seven offensive linemen on the depth chart expected to be gone after this year. Utu joins fellow 4-star OL recruit Ziyare Addison as to major acquisitions that will aim to help the turnover of the line. They're also joined by 3-star OL recruits Alai Kalaniuvalu, teammates with Utu at Bishop Gorman, and Demetri Manning from Bellevue, Washington.
That Team Out West keeps building.
