Ole Miss entered Saturday's game at Florida as the No. 9 team in the College Football Playoff rankings.
After four quarters in The Swamp, the Rebels were 24-17 losers, falling to 8-3 on the season. The loss effectively ended Ole Miss' playoff hopes, and turned up some heat on head coach Lane Kiffin. No, Kiffin's job isn't in danger, but there are definitely people questioning if he'll be able to take the proverbial next step in Oxford.
One of the people concerned about Kiffin is ESPN's Paul Finebaum. While speaking with colleague Matt Barrie Sunday morning, Finebaum broke down the Ole Miss loss and wondered openly if Kiffin has what it takes to break through.
“Unfortunately, Ole Miss found the hot team and just simply looked like they did against Kentucky about two months ago,” Finebaum told Barrie. “I feel bad because we sat here two weeks ago praising Lane Kiffin for finally winning the biggest game of his career. And now, he has lost the biggest game of his career. [It] clearly knocked them out of the playoffs.
“I mean, it came down to the final couple of seconds — so it wasn’t like they only scored three points and got rolled over. I know we’ll get to that game in a few minutes, but I don’t see them coming back. The real unfortunate thing is, this is the best Ole Miss team in 60 years. It was Lane Kiffin’s best shot, and if he can’t win with these guys, who can he win with?”
Interestingly, while Finebaum indicated he was worried about Kiffin's long-term success at Ole Miss, he also theorized that the longtime head coach could attract NFL attention this upcoming cycle.
Kiffin, 49, is 42-18 overall at Ole Miss since the beginning of the 2020 season. He's had the Rebels in New Year's Six bowls two of the last three years after playing in the Outback Bowl in his first season.
Ole Miss will close out the regular season in the Egg Bowl against rival Mississippi State, which is 2-9 on the year.
