Paul Finebaum Questions Georgia’s College Football Playoff Outlook

The Georgia Bulldogs have been the top program in college football since 2020, winning national championships in both 2021 and 2022. However, they are currently experiencing a rough patch, as they have not won a College Football Playoff game since 2022.

In 2023, the Bulldogs had an undefeated regular season but were defeated by the Alabama Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship Game, which eliminated them from playoff contention. The previous season, Georgia finished with a 10-2 record during the regular season but went on to win the SEC Championship Game. However, they lost to the Notre Dame Fighting Irish in the quarterfinals of the playoff after receiving a first-round bye.

On "The Paul Finebaum Show," the SEC Network analyst expressed uncertainty about whether the Bulldogs will return to the playoffs this season.

"I think a good year," Finebaum said. "Maybe a little bit hard to predict in terms of the playoffs, but I think 10-2 sounds about right. Depending on the momentum in late December, how far can they go?"

Two Losses Isn't a Season Ender for Georgia

Finebaum pointed out that having two losses in a season isn't necessarily a disaster, but he raises concerns about the importance of those losses and when they occur during the season. Last year, Georgia lost two regular-season games, one to the Alabama Crimson Tide and another to the Ole Miss Rebels.

Despite facing challenges, the Bulldogs advanced to the SEC Championship Game, where they triumphed over the Texas Longhorns with a score of 22-19 in overtime. This victory secured them the No. 2 seed in the College Football Playoff.

Georgia was eliminated in the quarterfinals by Notre Dame, losing 23-10. This occurred after star quarterback Carson Beck was injured in the first half of the game against Texas and required season-ending surgery.

Gunner Stockton stepped in to replace Beck and threw for 234 yards and one touchdown in the playoff game. He is anticipated to be the starting quarterback this season, as Beck has announced his transfer to the Miami Hurricanes.

Paul Finebaum Is Optimistic Due to Georgia's Kirby Smart

While the Bulldogs look to replace Beck, Finebaum still believes Georgia is one of the most talented teams in college football and boasts the best coach in the sport.

“They’re still as talented as probably almost every team in the country,” Finebaum previously said. “They have the best coach. Overall, the best program, but I see two losses.”

ESPN's Football Power Index (FPI) predicts that Georgia will complete the upcoming season with a 10-2 record. The FPI ranks the Bulldogs as the No. 2 team in the nation, just behind Texas.

Paul Finebaum Isn't Sure the Bulldogs Can Be Elite

Despite the optimism expressed by the FPI and Finebaum, the SEC Network analyst remains uncertain about Georgia's elite status.

“I think Georgia will be good, I’m just not convinced they’ll be great,” Finebaum previously said. “I think they can get to the playoffs. I really don’t see all that much on the schedule… I think they can scrape together a 10-2 record and hopefully by then Gunner Stockton is in a position to make some noise in the playoffs.”

The Bulldogs will showcase their elite status when they open their season against Marshall at 3:30 p.m. ET on August 30.
