Penn State running back Trey Potts, who spent one season with the Nittany Lions after transferring from Minnesota, will forgo his final season of eligibility and enter the 2024 NFL Draft. Potts announced his decision Thursday in a social media post.
"To the coaches, staff and amazing fans at Penn State, thank you for giving a kid from Williamsport, Pennsylvania, the opportunity to wear the blue and while and fulfill his dream of becoming a Nittany Lion," Potts wrote. "The memories and experiences will forever hold a special place in my heart."
Potts was one of Penn State's better stories of the 2023 season, a fifth-year running back who transferred to the school he initially wanted to attend. Potts, who spent four years in a complementary role at Minnesota, understood that he would play a similar role at Penn State. But Potts accepted, and even thrived, in his spot as the No. 3 back with Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen.
"He does whatever he can to get on the field to help our team win," Singleton said. "He's a team player. I love him to death. That's my man."
Potts (5-9, 215 pounds) was productive in limited snaps for the Nittany Lions, gaining 145 yards on 21 carries during the regular season. He averaged 6.3 yards per carry and scored two touchdowns. Potts caught a touchdown pass from Beau Pribula and also threw for a touchdown against Illinois.
"I give this kid a lot of respect," Penn State running backs coach Ja'Juan Seider said. "That meant a lot to me as a coach. That told me the type of competitor he is, to come to this place at this time with those two [running backs] says a lot about him."
Penn State's roster will be crowded with scholarship running backs in 2024. Singleton and Allen return, as do freshmen Cam Wallace and London Montgomery, who redshirted this past season. In addition, Penn State signed two running backs in the 2024 recruiting class, including Belle Vernon's Quinton Martin, the top-ranked player in Pennsylvania, according to the 247Sports Composite.
