Did anything interesting happen last week for Penn State?
Penn State is better than UCLA. It really is talented enough to not just get to the College Football Playoff, but make a big run if it gets there.
But it still has to go to Ohio State, deal with Indiana and Iowa, and it all starts here with a home date against Northwestern that needs to be a complete and total annihilation, just to show that it’s possible because ...
Northwestern beat UCLA.
It wasn’t pretty, but it won 17-14 before blasting ULM last week. It’ll be tough to get three more wins to go bowling, but a home game against Purdue is next.
Effectively ending Penn State’s season, though, would be everything for the Wildcats.

Take out the emotional toll of the last several days, Penn State's loss to Oregon went into double overtime. And then the team went out to Los Angeles, dealt with the wild four quarter ride against UCLA, flew back to State College, and then had to deal with the fallout.
That's a big physical grind for a team expecting to play for the national title.
Again, Northwestern beat UCLA. That was a different moment, and the changes in the coaching staff weren't there, but the defense pitched a gem.
Overall, the Wildcats haven't been bad, getting through games by controlling the clock, winning third downs, and ...
This is just the second road game of the season for Northwestern. The first was a 23-3 loss to Tulane.
The Wildcats were strong against Western Illinois, ULM, and again, UCLA, but the offense has yet to score more than 17 points against anyone but WIU and ULM. They'll need Penn State to screw up, and that's not going to happen.
Penn State has only turned it over three times, committed just 19 penalties in five games, and if anything, it's playing it a bit too careful. The ground game has been strong, Drew Allar, while inconsistent, hasn't been as awful as too many make him out to be, and ...
Deep breath, everyone.
Let's describe the UCLA thing this way - it was like an elite fighter getting caught with one unexpected punch that just so happened to perfectly land.
And yes, Nico Iamaleava really is that good - a simple fact that got lost in all the dunking for leaving Tennessee for the Bruins - and Northwestern doesn't have him.
Penn State is still one of the most talented teams in college football, and if it can somehow get through the rest of its schedule unscathed, it really could win the national title. But first, it's about to play a solid, methodical game against Northwestern for an easy win.
