The No. 8 seed Ohio State Buckeyes sealed the deal on Monday night, capping off an historic run in the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff to capture the national championship over the No. 7 seed Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
The Buckeyes left it all on the field, securing a 34-23 victory, led by quarterback Will Howard. Howard connected with Jeremiah Smith on a crucial 57-yard pass on 3rd-and-long to put the game out of reach in the final minutes of action.
Yet, mutual respect remained between Howard and Notre Dame quarterback Riley Leonard, both of whom had outstanding seasons. Their postgame interaction drew significant attention after the Buckeyes' victory, as Leonard made sure to congratulate several Ohio State players in a classy gesture.

Will Howard was named the Offensive MVP of the game after completing 17 of 21 passes for 231 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing 16 times for 57 yards. Notre Dame’s Riley Leonard, meanwhile, completed 22 of 31 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns, adding 40 rushing yards on 17 carries.
Both quarterbacks played exceptionally well, but Ohio State built a commanding lead that proved too much for the Fighting Irish to overcome. Despite Howard leading the Buckeyes to victory, Howard and Leonard share a unique connection.
The two were roommates at the Manning Passing Academy last year, a fact revealed prior to the game. Both quarterbacks had high praise for one another leading up to the showdown, not only as competitors but as people.
While Howard came out on top in this showdown, Leonard has left his mark on South Bend by leading Notre Dame to their most successful season in over a decade.
