The No. 2 Texas Longhorns fell short in their quest for the SEC Championship on Saturday, falling to the No. 7 Georgia Bulldogs in a 22-19 overtime loss in Atlanta.
It was a disappointing afternoon for starting quarterback Quinn Ewers, who finished the game 27-46 for 358 yards with a touchdown and two interceptions. Missed opportunities in plus territory plagued the Longhorn offense throughout the title fight as DeAndre Moore's 41-yard touchdown reception in the fourth was the only time the Longhorns found paydirt. Frustration mounted to the point where fans were calling for Arch Manning on social media.
"We were moving the ball well throughout the entire first half and like Coach Sark was saying, we had plenty of opportunities, Ewers said afterwards. "We shot ourselves in the foot a couple of times and got into some third and longs that were just hard to get out of."
Texas' struggles on offense were exacerbated by the absence of starting left tackle Kelvin Banks Jr., who sat out with an ankle injury that he suffered against Texas A&M the week prior. These red zone struggles extended into special teams, where kicker Bert Auburn missed not one, but two field goals that could've made a major difference.
"I feel like we had a good plan going in for sure and we just didn't capitalize, Ewers said. "At the end of the day, it's all on us and we had plenty of opportunities to capitalize and some games go that way I guess."
While the Longhorns' hopes for a first-round bye in the College Football Playoffs were dashed on Saturday, they are still a virtual lock to host a first-round game when the committee releases its final rankings on Sunday. Ewers and company have suffered setbacks before and he's confident that they will be able to learn from the overtime loss heading into the postseason.
"Our culture is built for this and we're built for the moments we're going into. I have no doubt that each and every guy in that room believes the same things I'm saying right now, Ewers said. "I said it earlier in the season, it's 10% what happens and 90% how you react to it and I think we do a good job at handling adversity."
