Recapping a Big Weekend of Commitments (7/31-8/2)

While the number of commitments over the weekend wasn’t extensive, several top-level recruits made important decisions. Here is a breakdown of the top commitments that occurred from 7/31 thru 8/2:

5-star ATH A’mir Sears (Miami-Florida)

The skinny: Overall, Sears commitment wasn’t a surprise, but what was surprising was that he announced his plans to reclassify from the Class of 2028 to 2027. This gave the Canes another five-star commitment in this class, and at the same time kept a local star home. Sears has the potential to play both sides of the ball, which has helped him draw comparisons to Travis Hunter. Aside from Miami, Sears also considered LSU, Michigan, Texas A&M, Florida and Syracuse, but the Canes were considered the frontrunner.

5-star RB Landen Williams-Callis (Texas)

The skinny: The elite home-state running back chose Texas over fellow finalists Texas A&M, Missouri, SMU, and Houston, giving head coach Steve Sarkisian another massive recruiting victory. During his junior season at Richmond Randle High School, which is approximately 150 miles east of Austin, he led his team to a 15-1 record and a state championship appearance by rushing for 3,502 yards and 59 touchdowns. Texas continues to recruit at an elite level.

4-star S Seth Williams (Georgia)

The skinny: The priority in-state defensive playmaker chose Georgia over his other top finalist, Clemson, giving head coach Kirby Smart yet another major recruiting victory over a regional rival. A standout at Lakeside High School in Atlanta, Williams prioritized the opportunity to play for his home-state program. Once Kirby Smart prioritizes a recruit, he continues to lock them down.

4-star CB Alius Mayo – Cal

The skinny: Mayo’s decision represents a massive recruiting victory for Cal head coach Tosh Lupoi, as he chose the Golden Bears over LSU, Alabama, Louisville and Arizona State. At 6-foot-4, 190-pounds, Mayo was widely considered the top JUCO recruit in the country during the Class of 2027 cycle. Before he played at Modesto CC, he played his high school football at Lincoln in Stockton, which is less than 100 miles from Cal’s campus. This played a major role in his decision.
