Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers seemed to be a matter of when rather than if over the last week or so, but until Saturday, the rest of MLB could hold out hope he’d land elsewhere.
But the biggest name available at this season’s trade deadline is officially on the move to Los Angeles, with the Dodgers sending three prospects to the Tigers for the back-to-back American League Cy Young winner.
Skubal is set to be a free agent this offseason and will likely land a massive contract, but what exactly that will look like is unclear with the Collective Bargaining Agreement set to expire and a work-stoppage looming with the players and owners reportedly not close to a new deal.
In the meantime, Skubal is hoping to help the Dodgers complete the first World Series three-peat in MLB since the New York Yankees from 1998-2000. In 16 starts this season, Skubal has a 2.79 ERA with 116 strikeouts in 96 2/3 innings, missing all of May and part of June after having a procedure to remove a “loose body,” in his elbow.
Which brings us to today’s quiz. Skubal is one of 30 pitchers in the live-ball era (since 1920) to win the pitching Triple Crown, finishing first in wins, ERA and strikeouts in 2024. With that being said, how many of those pitchers – including Negro League pitchers – can you name in five minutes?
Good luck!
