Week 2 of college football kicks off Friday night, and on Thursday, "College GameDay" host Rece Davis and ESPN analyst Pete Thamel released the latest episode of the "College GameDay" podcast, previewing several key matchups this weekend.
While Davis picked all the favorites to come out with victories, there was one matchup in particular that he seems to be wary about: an in-state showdown between the South Florida Bulls, coming off a dominant win against Boise State, versus the No. 13 Florida Gators.
Currently, the Gators are 18½-point favorites, according to DraftKings Sportsbook, but in the eyes of Rece Davis, they "better be careful" come 4:15 p.m. ET on Saturday.
"[South Florida's] got guys that won't be intimidated by going into the swamp and this is a little bit of a tricky situation for the Gators," Davis said. "I think this will be a really entertaining game and one where Florida better be careful.
"This could be a real signature moment for the group of five potential representative going into an SEC stadium if they can somehow pull this one off. They got a lot of guys back from last year."
Florida is coming off a dominant 55-0 win over LIU, but this matchup will be a much different test against a South Florida team led by head coach Alex Golesh, which boasts one of the most experienced squads in the nation in terms of continuity.
The Bulls are guided by quarterback Byrum Brown, who completed 16 of 24 passes for 210 yards and rushed 14 times for 43 yards and two touchdowns in South Florida's 34-7 upset over Boise State, a game in which they entered as 5½-point underdogs.
Rece Davis ultimately picked Florida to escape with a win, but this game has the makings of a potential letdown spot, especially with No. 3 LSU looming on the schedule next week. Billy Napier’s squad cannot overlook the Bulls, or they could become the talk of the weekend for all the wrong reasons.
