After hardly playing his freshman year at Oregon, Dowdell was Nebraska's starting tailback for most of the 2024 season, finishing with 143 carries for 614 yards (4.3 yards per carry) and 12 touchdowns, plus seven catches for 21 yards. That made him the Big Red's leading rusher and put him third on the team in all-purpose yards.

However, down the stretch, fellow sophomore Emmett Johnson started getting more of the playing time in the backfield. Johnson initially entered the transfer portal but decided to remain with the Huskers, which appears to have prompted Dowdell's move.
The decision makes Dowdell the 25th Husker to enter the portal, with just Johnson and defensive tackle Keona Davis opting to return after initially entering, per 247Sports. That's a lot of talent to replace, even though the Huskers do have to trim the roster a bit to get under the soon-to-be-implemented roster limits. It may also be part of the reason Nebraska has only added one transfer thus far.
Either way, it's unfortunate news for the Big Red and leaves a lot of production to be replaced next year and during the bowl game.
