Report: Kalen DeBoer To Be Next Coach of Alabama
Joe Nicholson-USA TODAY Sports

With the news of Nick Saban retiring from college football on Wednesday, the Alabama Crimson Tide were on the hunt for their next coach. Well, the Crimson Tide found their next coach in Kalen DeBoer.

DeBoer coached the Washington Huskies the past two seasons, resurrecting the program. In his time, he put together one of the best offenses in College Football, led by quarterback Michael Penix Jr. With Ja’ylnn Polk, Dillon, Johnson, Rome Odunze, and Jalen McMallin.

After taking over, the Huskies went from 4-8 to 11-2 in the 2022 season. This past season, the Huskies went 13-0, winning the Pac-12 Championship in the final season of the conference. He beat Oregon twice along the way. In addition, DeBoer guided the Huskies to the College Football Playoff, losing to Michigan in the National Championship Game.

After Saban stepped aside, there was much speculation on who will be the team’s next head coach. Some candidates are Dan Lanning of Oregon, Mike Norvell of Florida State, James Franklin of Penn State, Steve Sarkisian of Texas, Lane Kiffin at Ole Miss, and DeBoer at Washington. With Lanning, Norvell, and Sarkisian signing contract extensions with their respective schools, Alabama set their sites on DeBoer.

But it appears that all along, DeBoer was their guy. Washington Athletic Director Troy Dannen has aggressively tried to keep Kalen DeBoer at Washington as they switch to the B10. If DeBoer does stay in Washington, he would become one of the 10 highest-paid coaches in FBS and more than double his current annual salary of $4.2 million.

If DeBoer were to leave for Alabama, he would owe Washington $12 million if he were to be bought out. DeBoer just signed a contract through the 2028 season back in November.

Being the Alabama head football coach is one of the most prestigious jobs in all of college football. It is going to be tough to follow a legend like Nick Saban. DeBoer will not have it that easy. There will be a ton of pressure on him to win right away.
