Reporter Who First Broke Nick Saban's Retirement Gives Update on Kalen DeBoer Situation

Replacing Nick Saban at Alabama after he had led the program to six titles and recorded at least 11 wins in all but two of his 17 years on the job was never going to be easy.

With that in mind, Kalen DeBoer is just 14 games into his tenure as the head coach of the Crimson Tide, and it appears that it is trending in the wrong direction in the eyes of fans and even analysts. The former Washington head coach has as many losses (4) against unranked opponents in his 14-game tenure as Saban did throughout the entirety of his nearly two decades on the job.

To add more salt to the wound, Alabama dropped from No. 8 to No. 21 following its Week 1 loss to Florida State, marking the program's lowest ranking since 2008 when it started the year ranked No. 24.

As those around college football call for DeBoer's job, On3's Chris Low, formerly of ESPN and best known for breaking Saban's retirement news, delved into DeBoer's job security.

While Low admitted there's something off about this team, and it's unclear if they have truly bought into DeBoer's laid-back approach, he did reveal it's far too soon to entertain the discussion of firing the second-year head coach.

"Despite the restlessness in Tuscaloosa right now and calls for DeBoer’s job by some in the media, it’s way too premature, absurd really, to write the epitaph on his coaching career at Alabama," wrote Low. "It’s one game into his second season, and while some would argue that there’s a pattern developing, it’s still just one game."

Although DeBoer's job is safe for now, Low did reveal that if anyone's seat is getting hot, it'd be athletic director Greg Byrne.

"The Monday morning quarterbacks have set their sights on Alabama athletic director Greg Byrne as much, if not more, than they have DeBoer, but that’s what happens when you’re the guy who makes the call on the coach replacing a legend, and the transition is anything but smooth," wrote Low.

Alabama has games against Louisiana Monroe and Wisconsin to build momentum before making the trip to Athens to take on the No. 4 Georgia Bulldogs. If they drop one of the first two, things will really get interesting, but winning the next three could fend off some of the pressure and noise.
