Rich Rodriguez Likes What He’s Got at Quarterback

West Virginia’s new head coach, Rich Rodriguez, made a bold claim at Big 12 Media Days when detailing the position he’s most confident in: the quarterback room.

“That’s probably the room I’m least worried about from an athleticism and talent standpoint,” Rodriguez said. “I hope I can win with all three of them.”

That quote speaks volumes. Rodriguez isn’t hedging on the QBs. He’s confident, energized, and ready to lean on his signal callers without pressing too much urgency.

It’s a loaded statement coming from a coach who helped revolutionize the position nationwide. With his spread offense expertise, he knows talent when he sees it. Now, he’s saying his current group checks all the athletic and skill boxes.

The Mountaineers are fresh off a spring loaded with momentum from the transfer portal. According to CBS Sports, Rodriguez’s roster includes approximately 105 players, with seven quarterbacks in total. If he can tap into that QB depth, WVU avoids one of the most volatile variables in college football.

Here’s the key: Rodriguez didn’t say he knows which quarterback will lead. He said he’s “least worried.” That phrasing leaves the room open but underlines confidence. He trusts the athletic traits and wants time to let them play out.

This matters in a program rebuilding its identity. A steady quarterback room gives the offense a chance to gel early. It sends a signal to fans and recruits that WVU is serious about competing. Rodriguez needs a strong QB anchor if he’s going to revive the Mountaineers in the post-Neal Brown era.

Now the question is whether those three quarterbacks will deliver consistency once pads come on. Rodriguez has the pieces; now it’s time for results.

Rich Rodriguez didn’t leave Morgantown by accident. He believes he has the talent to win. And if the quarterback room holds up, West Virginia might just snap out of its roller coaster chapter and into relevance.
