Week two always brings fresh storylines. Teams are starting to settle in, early trends are emerging, and players who didn’t grab the spotlight in week one have a chance to make a statement. This week, three players stand out: Darian Mensah at Duke, Anthony Colandrea at UNLV and Robert Henry Jr. at UTSA. Each has a unique matchup that could define their team’s weekend and set the tone for the weeks ahead.
Duke’s sophomore transfer quarterback has already shown he can carry an offense. In the season opener against Elon, he completed 27-of-34 passes for 389 yards and three touchdowns, displaying precision and playmaking ability.
Week two will be a different challenge. No. 11 Illinois (1-0) comes off a dominant 52-3 win over Western Illinois and brings a physical, aggressive defense. Mensah will need to stay poised in the pocket, read complex coverages and deliver the ball accurately to his receivers. Standout cornerback Xavier Scott and the Illini secondary will test his decision-making and timing.
Why I’m watching: Mensah is a versatile quarterback who can elevate Duke’s offense through both the air and ground. If he performs well against Illinois, it could signal that the Blue Devils are ready to compete at a higher level in the ACC.
UNLV comes into week two at 2-0, and much of their early success has been driven by quarterback Anthony Colandrea. He’s completed 77.3 percent of his passes and managed the offense efficiently in the opening games, balancing the passing attack with a smart running game.
This week, the Rebels face a tough test against UCLA (0-1), which is coming off a 43-10 loss to No. 25 Utah (1-0). Colandrea’s ability to handle pressure, read defenses and make plays on the move will be crucial. He also has talented weapons around him, including receiver Jaden Bradley and running back Jai’Den Thomas, giving him options to stretch the field and keep UCLA’s defense off balance.
Why I’m watching: A strong showing from Colandrea could elevate UNLV’s national profile and show that this offense can compete against Power Four competition. Week two is an opportunity for him to cement his status as one of the Mountain West’s top quarterbacks.
UTSA’s rivalry matchup against Texas State will have plenty of intensity, and running back Robert Henry Jr. is the key to the Roadrunners’ offense. Henry opened the season with 177 rushing yards and two touchdowns against No. 19 Texas A&M (1-0), including a 75-yard long run, highlighting his explosive playmaking ability.
Texas State (1-0) is coming off a strong win over Eastern Michigan, so UTSA will need Henry to control the ground game, keep drives alive, and create opportunities in space. His ability to respond in a high-stakes rivalry environment will be critical to UTSA’s hopes of extending their 10-game home win streak at the Alamodome.
Why I’m watching: Rivalry games bring out the best in players, and Henry has shown he can make game-changing plays. If he performs at a high level, UTSA has a strong chance to secure a big in-state win and continue momentum into the rest of the season.
Week two is when we start to separate the early flashes from the real difference-makers. For Mensah, Colandrea and Henry, this weekend isn’t just another game. It’s their shot to show they can handle the pressure, carry their teams and set the tone for the rest of the season.
