Rival Coach Named as Potential Replacement for Mike Gundy at Oklahoma State

The growing sentiment surrounding Oklahoma State Cowboys head coach Mike Gundy is that it's a matter of when the program will move on from him, not if it will.

The former Oklahoma State quarterback, who has since become the program's winningest head coach, has been at the helm since 2005 but has fallen on rough times. The Cowboys finished the 2024 season 3-9 and were obliterated just last week against the Oregon Ducks 69-3.

While there's a full season left and Gundy can turn things around, The Athletic's Bruce Feldman and Ralph D. Russo reported Friday that there is growing buzz around Oklahoma Sooners offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle replacing Gundy as head coach.

"Some inside Oklahoma think Sooners offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle could be a target," wrote The Athletic. "Arbuckle, who turns 30 next week, has put a much-needed jolt into Oklahoma’s offense. In a 24-13 win against No. 15 Michigan last week, dynamic dual-threat QB John Mateer, who followed Arbuckle to Norman from Washington State, accounted for three touchdowns and helped the Sooners convert nine of 17 third-down tries."

Before his time in Norman, Arbuckle's offense at Washington State in 2024 ranked No. 22 in total offense and No. 12 in scoring offense.

The Oklahoma offense has also seen a significant uptick in productivity, with Mateer having thrown for 662 yards and four touchdowns while rushing for another three scores.

While Oklahoma signed Arbuckle to a three-year deal in December, it may be hard to keep him in Norman if the head coaching opportunities begin to pour in. As for the Cowboys, if they do decide to fire Gundy, he has a $15 million buyout.

The Cowboys take on the in-state rival Tulsa Golden Hurricane on Friday, Sept. 19, while the No. 13 Sooners will be taking on the Temple Owls on Saturday.
