The Ohio State Buckeyes are sitting nicely at 5-0 on the season with their first two Big Ten wins out of the way. Ohio State will be on the road this weekend against a good Illinois team that will give their best shot at knocking off the No. 1-ranked Buckeyes. Ohio State’s best win of the season is over Texas and that doesn’t look as good as it once did thanks to their loss to the Florida Gators.
Ohio State will continue to take it one week at a time, that’s always been something Ryan Day is very big on. But an issue just came up for the Buckeyes to deal with down the road that day didn’t want to see happen, and one that college football will likely fix at some point.
There will now be just one transfer window that will take place from Jan. 2 until Jan. 16 this winter. The 15-day window will be there for players to decide to enter the portal following their regular season and most bowl games. However, four teams will still be competing during this window still and they’ll now have to worry about recruiting the portal while preparing for a huge game. The semifinals of the College Football Playoff are on Jan. 8-9, 2026, and the CFP National Championship is on Jan. 19.
“I don't think it's a good idea at all,” Day said back on Sep. 9 about the new window. “In the conversations that we had with the Big Ten coaches, I think the majority of them agree. I just don't quite understand how teams that are playing in the playoffs are expected to make the decisions and sign their upcoming players while they're still getting ready to play [in] games. It doesn't make any sense to me.”
Notification of transfer window dates for DI football are approved by the DI Administrative Committee.

The committee’s action is not final until its meeting concludes Wednesday. Moving forward, DI football notification of transfer windows will be Jan 2-16, as recommended by the…
The era of the transfer portal and NIL has changed college football so much and this will be just another adjustment coaches and programs will have to make. The transfer portal has been vital for the Buckeyes and we’re seeing it even this season with players like RT Phillip Daniels, DE Beau Atkinson, TE Max Klare, and RB CJ Donaldson having an impact on this team. Teams will just have to manage recruiting while game planning for their semifinals and even the title game. A big part of General Managers in college football now is to handle those talks with agents and that’ll help out coaches some.
Still, it’s not an ideal situation when you would much rather have all focus on the task at hand. Eventually, there may be a resolution to the transfer portal window that works for everyone, but we’re not there with the latest change.
