Ryan Day Jokingly Announces Retirement After Ohio State's Win Against Minnesota

Ryan Day and the No. 1 Ohio State Buckeyes are getting better as each week of the college football season comes along, and Saturday's win over the Minnesota Golden Gophers is proof of that.

After Minnesota opened the game with a field goal to take a 3-0 lead, the Buckeyes went on to score 42 unanswered points in the team's 42-3 win. Led by redshirt quarterback Julian Sayin, who threw for 326 yards and three touchdowns, Ohio State scored its most points of the season against a Power 4 team.

As a result of the win, the team improves to 5-0 on the season, while head coach Ryan Day's overall record since 2018 is 75-10.

When speaking to the media after the game, Day learned that his win percentage of 88.2% officially led to him surpassing the legendary Knute Rockne for highest winning percentage in college football history.

An achievement that led to Day jokingly saying that it was time for him to hang it up.

"I'm glad you brought that up," Day told the reporter. "Because this is the last game I'll ever be coaching at Ohio State. I'm going to hang it up and that's it. I'm going to do a walk-off right now. I appreciate being the coach here...No. A long way to go. It has everything to do with the players the coach and this place."

Not many coaches can inherit a juggernaut like Day did after Urban Meyer stepped away from coaching in 2018. However, it may be just as rare to sustain the high-level success that day has as Ohio State has been to the playoff four times, and won the title last season.

The Buckeyes and Day will have a tough test to move to 6-0 next week as they'll make the trip to Champaign to take on the No. 17 Illinois Fighting Illini. That game is scheduled for noon ET and will air on Fox.
