Ryan Day reveals key Ohio State starter may be on the brink of making a crucial position switch with the Buckeyes

Former Ohio State offensive line coach Justin Frye deserves a lot of credit for the state he left the Buckeyes’ offensive line in. Heading into the 2025 season, the Buckeyes are set to have a strong unit—thanks largely to the development that has taken place over the past few seasons.

One transfer is likely to start for the Buckeyes: Ethan Onianwa. Outside of him, Ohio State is expected to start four players who were recruited and developed in-house.

Ryan Day made it clear back in the spring that Austin Siereveld would be a starter on the offensive line. Siereveld has primarily played guard for the Buckeyes in the past, though he has also spent time at right tackle this offseason. Now, it appears he may be making another position switch.

“He’s getting work at left [tackle] right now,” Day said on Tuesday.

Onianwa had previously been handling duties at left tackle, but now he’s seeing time at both right tackle and guard. Ohio State’s coaching staff is prioritizing versatility along the offensive line—and no player may be more versatile than Siereveld. His growth over the last year has been a major boost for the Buckeyes.

“First off, when you look at his size compared to the guys we’ve had in the past, he has plenty of size,” Day said of how Siereveld fits at tackle. “When you look at his athleticism, he’s athletic enough, and his strength is that way. So I’ve gone through it with Mick [Marotti] and with Tyler [Bowen] to see—does he have enough length? Does he have enough size to play the position? The answer is yes. And he was very comfortable there in the spring.”

We’re seeing some things out of him this offseason in terms of leadership—just taking on a great voice in that room. He was an Iron Buckeye. So all these things are leading us to believe that he can be our left tackle moving forward.”

Siereveld started two games last season and appeared in 15 total, serving as part of the rotation at right guard. Luke Montgomery appears to be locked in at left guard, while Tegra Tshabola is leading the way at right guard.

The starting five for Ohio State’s offensive line isn’t finalized just yet, but the pieces seem to be in place. Siereveld might just be the best of the bunch—and putting him at left tackle to protect the blindside of a first-year starting quarterback may be the right move.
