Scouting Overview

Miami Hurricanes wide receiver Sam Brown Jr. projects as a developmental wide receiver at the NFL level. He has a plus athletic profile with explosive qualities, but his lack of productivity despite hunting for good environments, including playing with the presumptive No. 1 overall pick in 2025, leaves some questions about just how ready he is for the pros.

Brown must develop his route running ability to convert his athleticism into separation and optimize his opportunities at the NFL level.

Background

Brown is from Savannah, GA, and played high school football for New Hampstead HS. There, he was a 3-star recruit at wide receiver who initially intended to play football at UCF. He flipped his commitment to West Virginia and enrolled in the program as a member of the 2020 recruiting class.

Brown played for the Mountaineers for two seasons, playing in nine total games. He would enter the portal after the 2021 season and landed with Houston — where he played for the 2022 and 2023 campaigns. 

He would go on to break out across those two seasons, although his stay in Houston was marred by a suspension for a physical altercation against Tulsa that caused him to miss the team’s bowl game in 2022. After earning Honorable Mention All-Big 12 honors in 2023, Brown again entered the transfer portal, where he landed with the Hurricanes. 

Brown caught passes from Cam Ward but saw his numbers regress during his final season of play; he caught nearly half as many balls for half as many yards as he did in 2023.

Brown projects best as a depth receiver right now. He’s not refined enough to win in isolation as a route runner and must cut his teeth as a special teamer while crafting more refinement into his ability to win without the football in his hands.
