Head coach Steve Sarkisian and the Texas Longhorns had a rough outing against the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday night. The Longhorns barely escaped Lexington with a 16-13 win in overtime.
The offense struggled in every aspect throughout the entire game, while the defense continued to prove itself as one of the best.
With questions and concerns surrounding the program after multiple ugly wins, Sarkisian spoke at his Monday conference about how it’s not about how pretty the wins are; it’s just about winning.
“Michael Taaffe reminded me in the locker room after the game the other night, the SEC champs of last year went to that same stadium and won 13-12,” Sarkisian said. “It’s not always about how pretty wins are in our conference. Sometimes you’ve got to find a way to win. We were able to do that, and now our focus is on by any means necessary. We’ve got to find a way to win Saturday in Starkville, Mississippi. It’s going to be a challenge. It’s going to be a tough game.”
While winning games are all that matter, the way a team wins usually says something about it, and if Texas is continuously struggling against low-tier SEC teams, then it’s going to leave many wondering how it’ll perform against top-tier ones.
With the Longhorns yet to face No. 10 Vanderbilt, No. 5 Georgia and No. 3 Texas A&M, they will really have to step up their level of play, because those are teams that Texas can’t just “find a way to win” against; it will have to control those games and win.
But like Sarkisian said, Texas will now hit the road again to face the Bulldogs in Mississippi. It’ll be a tough one, but we’ll see how the Longhorns respond when the game kicks off at 3:15 p.m. CT. Fans can catch the game on SEC Network.
