Is Florida Gators quarterback DJ Lagway currently overrated?
It's an interesting question going into the 2025 season. He currently ranks in the top 10 of Heisman Trophy odds after one season as the starting quarterback and is commonly thought of being a top-five quarterback in the nation.
SEC analyst for Louisianasports.net Chris Marler believes that he is currently the most overrated player in the country.
Lagway is very good. He may be great. And there’s no denying how incredible the skillset is or how elite his right arm can be. That being said, coming off a season where he completed under 60 percent of his passes and finished the year with 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions doesn’t equate to this level of hype.
Against SEC teams, Lagway had just one game where he completed over 53 percent of his passes. He also had a touchdown to interception ratio of 6:6. Granted, he will go into 2025 behind an offensive line that allowed the third fewest sacks in the SEC and will return four of five starters from a year ago. But what about everywhere else?
Okay, let's start here. The biggest argument for Lagway being overrated is rooted solely in counting stats. To be fair, Marler does mention that the Gators will have multiple new weapons taking premium spots, but some of them had major roles last season.
Counting stats only tell you so much. Touchdowns and interceptions only give you a small piece of the puzzle. The reality with Lagway is simple: he's got insane tools that showed excellent progression throughout the season. That's something you cannot measure.
These are the type of throws that Lagway can generate on a regular basis, and they match his five-star status and top quarterback in the 2024 recruiting class.

Plus, we have so much better information to help us understand what Lagway can do. He has a fantastic 8.88 yards per dropback and a very high 11.8 average depth of target are major signals that when Lagway is asked to make a play through the air, he does it much better than just looking at things like completion percentage and interceptions.
Lagway also showed incredible progress throughout the year, especially with his pocket management. He had 18 big time throws to just seven turnover worthy plays per Pro Football Focus over the season, and that tells much more of a story than interceptions. Lagway knows when to rip the ball down the field and when to be careful with it.
The hamstring injury that he suffered against Georgia hindered him significantly throughout the rest of the season, but he had two of his best games against Florida State and Ole Miss during that time. Seeing that progression is why he is being ranked so highly, and we didn't even get to see him uses his dynamic rushing ability.
Is he overrated? Perhaps, but using completion percentage and interceptions doesn't tell the story of what he currently is or can be. He's currently a projection, but we've seen how great he already is by the flashes, and a full offseason as the starter (even with the missed spring practice) will do wonders for him.
