The Alabama Crimson Tide entered Week 5 ranked No. 17 in the country, but after a massive victory over No. 5 Georgia in Athens, they climbed to No. 10.

Alabama got off to a sluggish start in Week 1, falling to Florida State. That loss put immense pressure on the team, leaving very little margin for error if the Crimson Tide hoped to avoid missing the College Football Playoff for a second consecutive season.

This time, however, head coach Kalen DeBoer had his team prepared. Alabama escaped with a 24-21 win, powered by a strong defensive effort and an impressive performance from quarterback Ty Simpson.

On Monday, the SEC announced that Simpson’s performance earned him the SEC Offensive Player of the Week honor.

Ty Simpson completed 24 of 38 passes for 276 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing four times for 12 yards and one touchdown, committing zero turnovers against one of the nation’s top defensive units in Georgia.

Alabama saw contributions from a variety of wide receivers in the win. Isaiah Horton led the way with five receptions for 65 yards and a touchdown, sophomore Ryan Williams added five catches for 43 yards, and Germie Bernard contributed five receptions for 35 yards and another score.

This season, Simpson may be slowly playing his way into the Heisman Trophy conversation, which appears to be wide open at this point.

He is completing 69.3% of his passes for 1,138 yards, 11 touchdowns, and zero interceptions, while maintaining a passer rating of 173.1.

Alabama now turns its attention to a home matchup against the No. 16 Vanderbilt Commodores—the same team that upset the Crimson Tide last season when they were ranked No. 1 in the nation. ESPN’s College GameDay will be in Tuscaloosa for the showdown.
