The No. 14 Michigan Wolverines won their Week 1 matchup against the New Mexico Lobos, 34-17. Freshman quarterback Bryce Underwood, the top-ranked QB in the 2025 recruiting class and the recipient of a $12.5 million NIL deal, led the Wolverines. Consequently, Underwood is expected to be the highest-paid true freshman in college football history.
On Saturday, Underwood became the youngest starting quarterback in Michigan football history at just 18 years and 11 days old. Despite his age and lack of experience, he threw for an impressive 251 yards, one touchdown and no interceptions on a 68% completion rate.
One notable highlight of Underwood's first college game came late in the first quarter. Michigan had the ball on the Lobos' five-yard line with a crucial third down and three on the way.
Underwood took the snap and handed the ball off to running back Justice Haynes, a transfer from the Alabama Crimson Tide, who then cut out left. Underwood trailed behind him, laying out a powerful block with his throwing arm on a New Mexico defender to help Haynes run the ball into the end zone.

After the game, Michigan head coach Sherrone Moore addressed the block, bluntly explaining that he told Underwood that it was a poor decision.
"I just told him not to throw any more blocks," Moore said.

Regardless of Underwood's questionable decision to make that block — a mistake which can be largely attributed to his inexperience and youth — Moore still remained extremely positive about the quarterback's performance.
"I've seen those throws live, but to watch him do it in the game was awesome," Moore said.
Moore also complimented Underwood's composure, often uncommon for players this young, stating, "the poise that he had throughout the game, not just on the field, but off the field... the kid is just cerebral."
The Wolverines will face the No. 18 Oklahoma Sooners next on Sept. 6 at 7:30 p.m. on ABC.
