With the transfer portal officially opening up on Monday, college football players all over the country are announcing their intentions to jump in.
On Thursday, Rice quarterback EJ Warner, the son of NFL legend Kurt Warner, revealed he's looking for a new home for his final season of college football. Warner began his career at Temple in 2022, playing two seasons for the Owls, before transferring for Rice for the 2024 campaign.
With Rice moving on from head coach Mike Bloomgren and hiring Davidson's Scott Abell, Warner decided it was best to move on. Abell is shifting to a spread option offense, while Warner is a pass-first QB.
"I want to say thank you to Coach Bloom, Coach Tui and Rice for giving me an opportunity to play for this great university and to build lasting friendships on and off the field," Warner wrote. "I also want to wish Coach Abell well as he looks to take the program to the next level.
"Due to the scheme and philosophy change, I will be entering the transfer portal in hopes of finding the best fit for my final year of eligibility."
This season, Warner completed 62% of his passes, throwing for 2,710 yards, 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions as Rice posted a 4-8 record.
In his final game with the program, Warner passed for 430 yards and three touchdowns in a 35-28 win over South Florida.
In his two years at Temple, Warner threw for 6,104 yards and 41 touchdowns, giving him 8,814 passing yards, 58 touchdowns and 37 interceptions in three seasons of college football. He was also named AAC Rookie of the Year as a true freshman in 2022.
Given his starting experience, past production at the college level and football pedigree, we'd expect Warner to have a pretty long list of suitors once he's officially in the portal.
