Sooners defender isn't afraid to say how he feels when it comes to an area of the team that was overlooked last season

Sooners defense can be better in 2025

They have taken what they learned last season and have used that to become better in 2025.

"I feel like we've communicated way better this year because we were taught a quiet defense is a dead defense," safety Robert Spears-Jennings said at SEC Media Days. "So this year we're emphasizing communication on defense a lot."

With some of the worst injuries in the country, the defense carried the load. So, retaining 64% of that elite defense, which is one of the best retention numbers in the country, and adding elite players on the defense, should equal another elite season on that side of the ball. In 2025, the Sooners' defense could really take over and absolutely dominate, especially as they have gotten better at some things.

“We can be a top 10 defense in the country, for sure,” Spears-Jennings said.

The Oklahoma Sooners should have a much-improved offense this year, with additions everywhere on the roster and the staff, including new offensive coordinator Ben Arbuckle and transfer star quarterback John Mateer.

So, if the offense is even competent, it could only make the defense better. The offense last season was one of the worst in the entire country, and it consistently put the defense in bad situations. With an offense that limits that, the defense won't have to do as much, which usually equals a better defense, and one that's fresher on the field.
