Sooners HC Brent Venables gives promising update on key player who's been through enough bad injury luck already

In their huge win over the South Carolina Gamecocks on the road , the Oklahoma Sooners looked like the team we all knew they could be. There is so much positive to take away from the game, including a positive injury update from Brent Venables on Gentry Williams.

According to Eddie Radosevich of SoonerScoop.com, Venables let everyone know that the initial prognosis on Williams is positive and that Williams is in a sling.

“Yeah, he banged a shoulder. Everything was clear in the X-rays and stuff, so hopefully he’ll be ok," Venables said.

Williams was down and helped off the field after South Carolina converted 36 yards on fourth-and-1, their biggest run of the day, and a large chunk of their 54 yards rushing on the day. After being evaluated in the injury tent, Williams was then taken to the locker room, where true freshman cornerback Courtland Guillory then replaced him.

You hope it's nothing too serious, because Williams has already had some bad injury luck.

Gentry Williams' bad luck with injuries

After starting and playing 10 games in 2023, Williams missed nearly all of 2024 with a shoulder injury. He also missed one game this season against the Temple Owls with an injury. So, in a way, you could say that Williams just can't catch a break.

And when Williams is healthy, he is one of the better cornerbacks on the team. But that's a big if. Overall, though, the secondary played fine without him.

Gentry Williams career stats

  • 2022 (Freshman): Played in 12 games, no starts. Recorded 7 tackles and one interception.
  • 2023 (Sophomore): Started all 10 games played, missing three due to injury. Tallied 30 tackles, four tackles for loss, three interceptions, one fumble recovery, and one pass defended.
  • 2024 (Redshirt Junior): Appeared in two games before a season-ending injury.

“Yeah, it was good, you know, we had a PI, that wasn’t great. A couple of PIs," Venables told reporters. "I’d rather them get a PI than (Let South Carolina) catch the ball, though. So we got to clean up some fundamental things, we got the one corner route on third and forever. I wish I could have a call back and put it into something different, and they made a nice play, but overall, top to bottom, I thought it was good."

Hopefully, Williams is back soon.
