Sooners legend lets everyone know that OU has a beast waiting to be unleashed on the defensive side of the ball
NATHAN J. FISH/THE OKLAHOMAN / USA TODAY NETWORK

The Oklahoma Sooners have had some dominant players come through Norman on their way to great NFL careers. We all know them, but just to name a few -- Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray, and I could keep going forever.

One thing the Sooners used to do a ton was produce elite defensive talents. Under Brent Venables, they have started doing that again, but when Lincoln Riley was the head coach, they were known almost exclusively for their offense and the players on that side of the ball.

Guys like Gerald McCoy were elite defensive linemen before that and made it to the NFL to have great careers after being dominant for the Sooners. He is also one of the biggest supporters of the program when it comes to his post-playing career. He's OU everything, even after a long career with the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

So, it's safe to say that the six-time Pro Bowler with 9 career NFL sacks knows a thing or two about defensive line play. And, he thinks the Sooners have a beast ready to be unleashed in defensive lineman Gracen Halton.

If he figures things out and reaches his potential he can be a day 1 guy - Gerald McCoy via Twitter/X, former Sooners DL and NFL DL

According to The Draft Room, which tweeted the tweet that McCoy was quoting, Halton led all DTs in pressure rate at 13.6% and led all DTs in pass rush win rate at 12.5%, which is more than impressive. The guy can get the job done in the run game, too.

And, he is a big reason why people are saying that the Sooners could not only have the best defensive line in the SEC in 2025, but the best defensive line in the entire country. It's very possible, and if Halton is on his game, they could be nearly unstoppable.

Obviously, the offense has to come together in 2025; that's one of the most important things after that abysmal 2024 season. But having an elite defense is what will help Venables keep his job if the offense is indeed there. Halton can help him with that, too.
