Sooners QB enters early Heisman conversation with debut

The Oklahoma Sooners have a deep and illustrious history with transfer quarterbacks. On Saturday, John Mateer showed why he could be the next great signal-caller in Norman.

In his first game since transferring from Washington State University, Mateer threw three touchdowns and ran for another as the Sooners opened with a 35-3 home throttling of Illinois State.

The junior went 30-for-37 through the air for 392 yards and added 24 yards on seven carries on the ground to show he can indeed be the offensive catalyst the Sooners hoped he would be when he landed in Norman.

Mateer's 392 passing yards set a new Oklahoma record for a quarterback in his debut, passing Baker Mayfield's 388 yards against Akron on Sept. 5, 2015.

Mayfield, who transferred to Oklahoma from Texas Tech, would go on to win the Heisman Trophy two years later. Another transfer quarterback, Kyler Murray, would also win a Heisman for the Sooners after taking over in Norman for Mayfield.

Could Mateer be the next new Sooner to take home college football's biggest individual prize? Per BetMGM, Mateer opened the weekend at +2500 to win the Heisman. Those numbers could go up after Mateer's performance against Illinois State and the Saturday struggles of fellow SEC quarterback Arch Manning of the University of Texas.

After their first two drives on Saturday ended with a punt and fumble, Mateer got the Sooners offense going. Putting together a 10-play, 94-yard drive, Mateer scored OU’s first touchdown of the season (and his first as a Sooner) on a seven-yard rushing play with :39 left in the first quarter.

That initial scoring drive would be a catalyst for Mateer and the Sooners. He completed 15 of 18 passes for 227 yards and a touchdown and rushed four times for 14 yards and a score in the first half as OU took a 21-0 lead into intermission.

Former Heisman Trophy winner and current "SEC Nation" analyst Tim Tebow has already named Mateer as the player he's most excited to watch this season. After Mateer's performance in his debut, that sentiment may grow heading into Oklahoma's top-20 showdown against Michigan in Norman next Saturday.
