College football felt a shockwave earlier this week after news reports revealed that Oklahoma Sooners star quarterback John Mateer was dealing with a hand injury that needed surgery. He will miss time, but the specific timetable remains a bit cloudy.
That being said, Sooners fans got a first-hand (no pun intended) update from their QB just after a successful operation on his throwing hand thumb.
Via Twitter/X, the Heisman Trophy candidate QB gave fans exactly the news they were hoping for this week. Mateer's hand surgery was a success. Mateer is certainly excited for a return with the Sooners, too.
"Thank God for a successful procedure. Dr. Shin is the GOAT. BOOMER SOONER!!" -- John Mateer

Mateer’s timeline to return is unknown at this point in time. On3’s Pete Nakos reported that there is some hope that Mateer could be back in time for the Red River Rivalry game, but it will all depend entirely on how his recovery goes. ESPN’s Pete Thamel called the surgery a “straightforward” surgery that will keep Mateer out for a full month. -- AJ Schulte
The transfer quarterback has impressed in a huge way and was at the helm of Heisman odds through the first month of play. With his time missed, Mateer won't be able to win that award, but he can still make a massive impact during SEC play. The Sooners need him to be healthy once he's back.
"Through a 4-0 start to the season for No. 7 Oklahoma, Mateer had been all the Sooners expected him to be, if not more, when they got him out of the NCAA Transfer Portal. He was 95-141 (67.4%) for 1,215 yards, six touchdowns, and three interceptions, while also rushing for 190 yards and five more scores." -- On3.com
Mateer is doing well after his procedure, and it is easy to get excited about his potential return in the future for Boomer Sooner.
