Stephen A. Smith Sends Heartfelt Message to Deion Sanders

The sports world paused for a moment of reflection today as ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith used his platform on First Take to send an impassioned message to Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders, a man Smith calls his “brother.”

The outspoken analyst didn’t hold back his emotion while addressing the ongoing health issues facing Sanders, who has dealt with multiple surgeries and complications related to blood clots in recent years. Despite Coach Prime’s public optimism and electric presence on the sidelines, Smith reminded viewers that appearances don’t always tell the full story.

“We just spoke two weeks ago for a lengthy period of time. He sounded absolutely positively fine,” Smith said on First Take. “But that doesn’t always provide the greatest indication of what somebody is going through.”

The segment struck a chord with Buffaloes fans and football fans everywhere, because it highlighted a reality that transcends sports: even the strongest figures face vulnerable moments.

Sanders, 57, has had several toes amputated due to circulation issues and has undergone multiple surgeries to prevent further complications. While he continues to coach with his trademark fire, recent updates have sparked concern among fans. The Buffaloes, coming off a season that blended promise with growing pains, are again a national focus, but this time, the spotlight is on their head coach’s health.

Smith acknowledged that the sports industry, and especially the football world, owes a great deal to Sanders. From his Hall of Fame NFL career to his transformational role in college football, particularly with Colorado’s resurgence, Prime’s impact is undeniable.

“You revered this man and what he has meant to the world of football, to the world of sports overall,” Smith said. “So we just pray for his full recovery.”

The ESPN host ended his message with a powerful and personal plea:

“Know that you got everybody. You got a whole bunch of people out here rooting for you and wishing you the greatest of health and nothing but love for you, my brother. Get well soon.”

As the Buffaloes gear up for the 2025 season with renewed expectations and a retooled roster, Sanders’ health will remain a focal point. But one thing is certain, he won’t be walking that journey alone.

To Colorado fans and college football faithful alike, now’s the time to rally around Coach Prime. Show your support, spread awareness, and keep him in your thoughts. Because the next big win isn’t on the scoreboard. It’s his health.
