The Texas Longhorns ended their streak of season-opening wins on Saturday, with a 14-7 loss to the Ohio State Buckeyes.
Before Saturday, the Longhorns had won their last six season openers, with the last loss coming in 2018 against the Maryland Terrapins by a score of 34-29.
Head coach Steve Sarkisian entered 2025 with a 38-17 record and two consecutive College Football Playoff appearances. His team was held scoreless in the first half, marking the first time a preseason No. 1 team achieved this feat since the 1988 Florida State Seminoles.
After the game, Sarkisian spoke to the media and reassured the fans that the Longhorns would be just fine.
"We're going to be fine," Sarkisian said. "We've got work to do as a team and as an offense, but ultimately, I'm getting on the plane knowing we're going to be a good football team. We didn't win tonight. That's the life of a competitor. We went for it in a tough place against a good team. But we'll get back on the horse and we'll play good football this season."
Saturday's loss was also the first time that a preseason No. 1 team lost in its season opener since the 1990 Miami Hurricanes. Miami lost 28-21 to the BYU Cougars that season.
The game was tough to watch for Texas fans, including actor Matthew McConaughey, who was in attendance. McConaughey was seen exiting the game early following a turnover on downs by the Longhorns.
Luckily for Texas, it is a long college football season.
