The story behind former Texas Longhorn quarterback Quinn Ewers, the transfer portal, and the 2025 NFL Draft decision has been discussed nonstop over the last several months. With Ewers’ status as the top rated high school quarterback in 247Sports history once upon a time, the attention has firmly been on the Southlake Carroll star for a long, long time. From his decision to reclassify to the 2022 recruiting class, brief stop at Ohio State, and being the supposed savior of Texas football, everyone has been watching closely.

The hype has lessened the more Ewers played the last couple of seasons, which is typically how these things worked out. After three years as a starter for the Longhorns, most would conclude that Ewers was a good college quarterback, but he definitely didn’t live up to the daunting expectations. Still, 76 total touchdowns and two College Football Playoff appearances is nothing to scoff at.

According to multiple sources, and several outlets, Ewers did have a lot of options when it came to the 2025 NFL Draft. With one year of eligibility remaining, there was reportedly a lot of money on the table and Ewers was linked heavily to the Miami Hurricanes for a brief stretch. In the world of NIL and the transfer portal, decisions have gotten a lot tougher and it has caused some talented players to opt for an additional year of college with the type of money that is out there.

With all the options on the table, Ewers decided it was time to move on to the next challenge, citing his want to end his career as a Texas Longhorn. As the talented passer fell to the Miami Dolphins in the seventh round a couple of weeks ago, people were again left to wonder if Ewers had made the right decision. At least for the 2025 season, it appears he could have made more money, and had an opportunity to raise his draft stock for 2026.

In a landscape where most people yell about the greed corrupting the sport we all love, now several were left criticizing Ewers for not valuing that short-term payoff more. Ewers’ former head coach at Texas, Steve Sarkisian, chose to fight back against the hypocrisy. He had some strong words during his interview with CBS Sports college football analyst Josh Pate.

Coach Sarkisian was cleared annoyed by the constant conversation, and criticism that Ewers has had to deal with. As he stated, the decision was his, and we have no right to “judge and criticize a young man’s decision.” At the end of the day, Ewers made the choice he thought was best for him. He chose his path, and now it’s left for him to make the most out of it.

In Longhorn country, they were ready to turn the page to the Arch Manning era regardless of whether Ewers wanted to return to college. That doesn’t mean the fanbase, and Sarkisian, aren’t extremely appreciative for all that Ewers accomplished in Austin. Celebrating that, and hoping for the best for Ewers, should be the perspective that many should default to right now, especially in the greedy and volatile landscape we call college football today.
