After a 9-4 season that saw the TCU Horned Frogs finish fifth in the final Big 12 standings, coach Sonny Dykes is making changes.
The team will make roster moves as the spring commences and the transfer portal window opens and closes before we get to summer football, but coach Dykes is working to improve his staff before that happens.
Early this week, Dykes announced the hiring of Tre Watson as the team's safeties and nickels coach. He will also serve as the passing game coordinator.
Watson arrives in Fort Worth from Cal, where he served the past four seasons as the defensive backs coach. He has a relationship with TCU defensive coordinator Andy Avalos where the two worked together at Oregon in 2019.
Last season, Cal's defense forced 22 turnovers with 17 interceptions. In 2023, the Golden Bears' defense tied for the national lead with 28 takeaways and was best in the FBS with 16 fumble recoveries while scoring three defensive touchdowns.
Before Cal, Watson served as the DBs coach at UNLV where he was named by 247Sports to its "30-under-30" list.
Last season, TCU's defense finished ninth in the Big 12 allowing 320 total points and ninth allowing 24.6 points per game.
