Tennessee set to land transfer quarterback in the ultimate switcheroo after Nico Iamaleava transfer

It appears as though the Tennessee Vols - Nico Iamaleava saga has created another interesting chapter that will continue in Knoxville in 2025.

According to ESPN senior college football writer Chris Low, quarterback Joey Aguilar plans to transfer to Tennessee from UCLA.

As Low puts it, it indeed is a trading of places for the two QBs.  As of two weeks ago, Aguilar was set to be the Bruins' likely starting QB in 2025 after transferring from Appalachian State in the winter portal window.

However, the fallout between Iamaleava and/or his camp and Josh Heupel and the Tennessee program that took place abruptly a week and a half ago rocked the college football world. Once the dust settled, Iamaleava was heading west, and now his would-be competition is heading to fill his shoes in Knoxville.

It's honestly an absurd situation from top to bottom, but that's the college football world that everyone is living in right now.

What Tennessee nets from this is something they don't have that they need - an experienced quarterback with a recent history of production.  The only scholarship QBs that Heupel has are redshirt freshman Jake Merklinger and true freshman George MacIntyre. Aguilar brings to Knoxville with him 25 games, 6760 passing yards, 56 touchdowns, 24 interceptions, 452 rushing yards, and 5 rushing scores over the last two years with App State.

It's hard to see the job being promised to Aguilar, and surely there will be an open competition this fall.  However, the Vols have one more option at a position very much uncertain, and that's nothing but a good thing - irrespective of the truly bizarre way it went down.
