Tennessee Vols fans were more than happy to celebrate USF's upset win over the Florida Gators last weekend.
Whenever Florida loses, it always brings a smile to the faces of Vols fans.
But that's not the only reason that USF's win against Florida was special for Vols fans.
USF is led by head coach Alex Golesh, who served as Tennessee's offensive coordinator in 2021 and 2022. Golesh is still a fan favorite on Rocky Top due to his genuine personality and the success he helped Tennessee's offense achieve during his two seasons in Knoxville.
For many Vols fans, the next best thing to seeing Tennessee win in the Swamp is watching Golesh lead USF to victory there.
Golesh's win against the Gators, however, could end up leading to a nightmare scenario for Tennessee fans.
USF's win against Florida essentially turned up the heat on Gators head coach Billy Napier.
The fourth-year Florida head coach is squarely on the hot seat after the Gators paid USF to come to Gainesville and hand them an L.
And ESPN pointed out Golesh this week as someone who could be on the short list to replace Napier (if Napier is indeed fired later this season).
Golesh in Gainesville is the last thing Vols fans want to see. For starters, it would instantly turn Golesh from a fan favorite in Knoxville to the enemy. Secondly, and most importantly, Golesh would have tremendous resources at Florida. We know he can coach. At Florida, Golesh could land elite talent. You never know how a hire in the SEC will go, but I think Golesh would be a problem at Florida.
Of course, we don't know if Golesh would even be interested in the Florida job -- he may be happy at USF (living in Tampa is a nice perk of being the head coach at USF). Golesh, after all, has never been the type to chase the next big thing.
Vols fans are certainly hoping that Golesh will decide to make USF his longterm home. He's dangerous there, but he's not as dangerous as he would be in the SEC.
