Any defense is going to be nasty when Mike Elko is the head coach, but it can do more.

Last year’s A&M defensive front was loaded with talent, but it averaged fewer than two sacks per game and didn’t hold up late in the season. The tackles for loss will keep coming, the run defense should be fine, and overall, this group will be fine.

But after allowing 44 points to South Carolina, 43 to Auburn, and 35 to USC among the late losses, it all starts by figuring out …

- Who are the new pass rushers? Shemar Stewart was a first round pick by Cincinnati, Nic Scourton was a second round selection by Carolina, and now the opportunities are there for a slew of promising talents and transfers.

TJ Searcy (Florida) and Damon Hayes (Rutgers) are two talented veterans who’ll get every chance to be the new stars on the other side of Cashius Howell, a great pass rusher for Bowling Green who made four sacks last year for the Aggies in a rotation.

The tackle situation is a tad more settled. Albert Regis is a 315-pound veteran in the middle of the line - the returning starter should be the anchor - with Tyler Onyedim (Iowa State) and DJ Hicks to different types of players to rotate into the mix.

- The linebacking corps will be a plus. Scooby Williams was hurt for a few games, but he should be one of the team’s leading tacklers in the middle, and leading tackler Taurean York returns after making 82 tackles with 2.5 sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss. The depth is terrific, led by Daymion Sanford, who made 33 stops in a reserve role.

- After a bit of a rough year, the secondary will play around with the rotation through fall camp. All-SEC corner Will Lee made 42 tackles with ten broken up passes and two interceptions, including the huge pick-six for the only points in the loss to Texas.

The other side will be a battle with Julian Humphrey (Georgia) and Dezz Ricks battling for time. Safety Dalton Brooks was second on the team with 59 tackles, and Bryce Anderson should return to his free safety spot.
