Just days after suffering a disappointing Week 1 loss to Ohio State, Texas learned that one of its defensive players was arrested for a Class B misdemeanor.
According to Andrew Schnitker of KXAN, Texas defensive back Wardell Mack was booked into the Travis County jail this Wednesday. Court records show that he was charged with driving while intoxicated. The redshirt freshman's bond was set at $3,000.
Mack's attorney, Logan Campbell, declined to comment on this situation. He released this brief statement instead: "Due to the pending nature of the case, we have no comment at this time."
Texas hasn't said anything either about Mack's arrest. The Louisiana native received limited playing time in 2024, but he still managed to intercept a pass against Colorado State.
It's possible Texas waits for more information before benching Mack. However, the defense would probably be just fine this Saturday without the former four-star recruit.
For starters, Texas is a massive favorite (36.5 points) heading into its Week 2 contest against San Diego State. It's also worth noting that Steve Sarkisian's defense did its job last weekend, holding Ohio State to 14 points. If anything, it's Arch Manning and the offense that has to step up over the next few weeks.
“Ultimately, not good enough. Obviously you don’t want to start off the season 0-1,” Manning said after the Week 1 loss. “They’re a good team. I thought we beat ourselves a lot, and that starts with me. I’ve got to play better for us to win.”
Texas should be just fine over the next three games - with or without Mack. The real test comes on Oct. 4 against Florida.
