No. 7 Texas got a win Saturday to the tune of 38-7 versus San Jose State. But it wasn't to head coach Steve Sarkisian's standard.
"I felt like we had some opportunities to make some more plays that we didn't make. We didn't block some things as well as we should have. We had holding penalties on the perimeter and at the line of scrimmage," Sarkisian said. "We had false start penalties. And so that it's kind of like two steps forward, one step back. It's hard to find rhythm and consistency as an offense when you play that way. We've got to find more rhythm and consistency."
The game was never in doubt, Arch Manning had four touchdown passes, and the defense was stout. But, again, it was not up to Sarkisian's standard at Texas and with Florida looming in a few weeks, you know the Texas head coach is wanting to be sharp.

"We talked all week about our ability to generate turnovers on defense. It wasn't just about stopping people, but that we need to attack the football more," Sarkisian said. "Clearly we did that in the first half, getting the four turnovers in a variety of ways, and a bunch of different people creating those turnovers with Jelani with the tipped interception and the forced fumble, Anthony Hill two forced fumbles, Ty'Anthony Smith forced fumble and a recovery, Trey Moore fumble recovery, Jaylon Guilbeau.
"So a lot of different people. But a lot of similar people of who I talked about could generate those turnovers during the week," Sarkisian said. "And so the idea that we were able to get what we emphasized I thought was a huge component of that."

"I'm definitely concerned about that as a coach. As a coach you always, unfortunately, like I always see the things that I try to look through the windshield," Sarkisian said. "But I definitely don't not look in the rear view mirror as we go through games. And the timely penalties a week ago were critical to us not winning that game.
"You know, the one touchdown drive they have, the first drive they have was 30 yards of penalties. And so when you come out today and you have 12 penalties for 115 yards, and it's easy to say, 'Oh, it was just this guy or that unit's problem.' It was a variety of things. And so to me, that's part of one, our mental intensity and our focus as a team to do things the right way," Sarkisian said. "You know, we had holdings on the perimeter. We had holdings on the interior line. We had a roughing the passer. We jumped off sides on defense, and so it was kind of across the board, which to me is my foot's got to get in their butt here on Monday morning.
"Like, that's unacceptable. And there's a standard in which we want to play the game and 12 penalties does not meet that standard."
