College football fans will get a behind-the-scenes look at several SEC programs next summer as Netflix officially announced on Wednesday a docuseries following the 2024 season.
Just, don't expect to see Steve Sarkisian, Quinn Ewers or Arch Manning featured in the show. Sorry, Longhorns fans.
The Athletic's Seth Emerson reported that Texas was one of six schools to pass on being featured in the Netflix series, joined by Alabama, Georgia, Missouri, Oklahoma, and Ole Miss. The show will center around the remaining 10 schools in the league in a similar fashion to the streaming platform's popular Formula 1: Drive to Survive series.
Texas' exclusion from the show definitely dampens some of the anticipation for the series as it would've been fascinating to get an in-depth look at the program in its first season in the SEC.
The announcement of the Red River Rivalry schools joining the conference in 2021 sent shockwaves throughout college athletics that are still being felt today. It would've been fascinating to see the Horns' preparation for joining the league last summer, including the full-day celebration event on campus on July 1.
We could've also gotten plenty of screen time for the aforementioned Ewers and Manning as they respectively navigated through the 2024 season. It would've been an interesting dynamic to see how the veteran Ewers handled the pressure of performing in the sport's toughest conference and how the younger Manning handled his role as a backup despite various calls for him to start. We could've also gotten to know both Outland Trophy/Lombardi Award winner Kelvin Banks Jr. and Thorpe Award winner Jahdae Barron as they individually dominated through the campaign.
Nevertheless, it wasn't meant to be and it's understandable. Given the high-pressure nature of some of these programs, it is no surprise that Texas, Alabama, and Georgia shut down any behind-the-scenes access to their respective locker rooms. However, it is a bit surprising that Lane Kiffin wouldn't want Ole Miss featured, given his personality.
Even with these absences, we should still get plenty of good content next summer.
