Quinn Ewers is poised to have a big 2024 college football season before entering the NFL Draft, but many people forget how he got to this point.
Ewers has played in 22 games over the last two seasons for Texas and has improved in each of the last two seasons. Now, he is projected to be one of the first quarterbacks who hear their name called in the 2025 NFL Draft.
In the class of 2021, Ewers was ranked the No. 1 player in the entire class out of Southlake, Texas, and signed with the Ohio State Buckeyes. Ewers played in one game in Columbus and did not record a pass attempt. Still even with the short stint in Columbus, Ewers has revealed the positives from his time with Ohio State.
"I mean, I learned a whole lot through coach (Ryan) Day," Ewers said on Robert Griffin III’s RG3 and The Ones podcast. "You know, that whole quarterback room, we had some good quarterbacks in that room. And just learning from them being the new guy coming I mean, I came in the middle of fall camp up there. So that's like all I knew, that’s what college football was for me, was just fall camp. So you know, going into that was definitely tough."
It comes as no surprise that Day had an impact on Ewers positively, even though he was never playing in games for the team. Part of the reason Day got the job was his work with the quarterbacks and he has helped Dwayne Haskins, Justin Fields, and C.J. Stroud.
Ewers landed a big NIL out of college and Ohio State was likely the initial landing spot for that reason. If Ewers was to stay at Ohio State, he would have had to sit in 2022 behind Stroud, which may have been the difference between him staying in Columbus or leaving.
In the podcast with RG3, Ewers said the distance from home was another factor in him going back to Texas. It has worked out for Ewers, who has held off talented backup Arch Manning from taking the job from him.
That 2021 Ohio State team had Stroud, Ewers, Kyle McCord, and Jack Miller on the roster as quarterbacks.
Since leaving Ohio State, Ewers has played well at Texas and they’ll again compete for the College Football Playoff this season. Not having a bad thing to say about the Buckeyes will garner some Ohio State fans still being in his corner, unless Texas is going up against Ohio State.
