The Texas Longhorns' 2025 college football schedule had already been announced, although without kickoff times for most matchups. On Tuesday, Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte revealed a pivot to the date of one September matchup, per On3's Griffin McVeigh.
A non-conference matchup against Sam Houston State is now scheduled a week earlier and will provide a bye week before the Longhorns begin their SEC schedule against Florida on October 4.
“Our home football game with Sam Houston this fall is moving up a week to September 20,” Del Conte said. "It was originally scheduled for September 27 but will now be played a week earlier."

“Closing out our non-conference schedule that includes a road game at Ohio State (Aug. 30), and home games with San Jose State (Sep. 6), UTEP (Sep. 13) and Sam Houston (Sep. 20). We’ll have a bye-week Sep. 27 then open SEC play at Florida (Oct. 4).”
Texas finished 7-1 in SEC play in 2024, enjoying a successful first year in the conference. However, the season ended in a 28-14 loss to Ohio State in the Cotton Bowl, the College Football semifinal.
The pressure will be on Texas, as expected for the college football powerhouse, but the spotlight may be brighter with quarterback Arch Manning likely beginning the season as the team's starter.
Arch, son of Cooper Manning and nephew to Peyton and Eli Manning, threw for 939 yards, nine touchdowns and two interceptions in limited playing time behind Quinn Ewers last season, who departed the Longhorns by declaring for the 2025 NFL Draft.
